I have been doing this in the FC Youth Program – Older kids mentoring and leading younger ones rather than hanging out with just their own ages and just acting goofy or forming groups. This is the way to get kids responsible and nurture self learning and self confidence. Very good article – bravo to this school and teachers!

———————–

Brock University professor tries to stop bullying by changing recess in St. Catharines schools

I stand in a jittery line of kids stretching down the long hall of Westdale Elementary in St. Catharines, waiting like caged horses for the bubbly bells to sound.

Recess! Freedom! Agony!

Twenty precious minutes to play, run, dodge punches, be shunned.

Remember recess? If you are a popular kid, it is a glimmery vacation from the school day. If you are an outcast, it is a torture chamber. There are statistics to prove this, but we all know it just as reindeer know when the herd is turning. Recess is the wilderness outside the protective wires of orderly desks, mechanical pencil sharpeners and patrolling adults.

Something like “what if my parter is really tense? or what if someone just trying systema really challenges me in class?” on and on – you get the picture. By asking any questions to get an answer that makes you better than someone else only reaffirms that your training has a ceiling and limits. That statement is from my knowledge.

If you asking ‘what I see’ and ‘how I see’ things when I train or teach it goes a little something like this….I see other peoples insightful nature and unique gifts – both to themselves and to systema. They look like people worth helping, learning from and leading. That is all I see…
