Show or Go?August 26, 2020
I like to think of the movements we use in Systema as a kind of ‘Fighting Gymnastics’ to honour its martial heritage. Learning to move your body in space with smooth, speed and power has so many benefits to your life, not just fighting. Personally, I really love to move with that kind of “silent power”.
If you’re looking to burn fat or bulk up, sure, you’ll build muscle and lose body fat practicing Systema, but these are not their primary goals; much like the warrior physique is merely a by-product, not the intent, of fighting efficacy. The appearance is not the destination; just a part of the journey
I’ve often alluded during class to the difference between “Show muscle” and “Go muscle”.
If you want to look like a statue, that’s fine; but take care that you don’t become one. Train to develop the fire to desire movement with power, rather than merely appearing powerful. Power means nothing without the ability to navigate unknown and surprise obstacles and resistance with ease and imagination.
Movement or moving seems easy but don’t make the big mistake of rushing! Be fully compliant too incremental progression. Short cuts are plentiful but lead down the wrong path. We cannot make the progress shorter, but we can make it much longer, with significantly more severe consequences.
I cannot help you shorten the journey. No one can. But I can help you not lengthen the journey. I can help you lessen the severity of the consequences through Systema training at FightClub.
I just posted some footage of me working out in my garage to give you some ideas and inspiration – Check it out https://www.facebook.com/emmanuel.manolakakis
I call to the mature warrior within you, to awaken! Come and train to find your movement and your power!
Remember we are still training Outdoor (by popular demand) until September 3 and then Indoors back at the newly renovated FightClub from September 8th, 2020.
Thank You Emmanuel
with great interest have I listened to yet another of your fascinating podcast messages, thoughts, and concepts to ponder, and watched your abundant video content. I only have been to one of your live-classes once, many years ago while visiting Toronto. Nonetheless, this all made and still makes a very positive impact on me.
I still apply as much as I can of what I learn, read, and see from your sources into to my life and practice. Without a doubt, it’s a challenging, yet fascinating journey to explore more and more of and about myself, as well as the immediate environment, and all sorts of communication with people, be it verbally, physically, or energetically.
It’s probably needless to say, yet I encourage you to keep going and inspire people of all walks of life. I appreciate your sharing in a way that’s open-minded, creative, clear, honest, and more.
I gladly send the very best wishes for your practice and good health.” ~ Frank
