Kids Martial Arts Classes in East York: Why We Teach Character Before Contact

If you've searched for kids martial arts classes in East York, you probably have a picture in your head already: rows of kids in uniforms, coloured belts on the wall, a grading test every few months. That's not what happens at FightClub, and it's worth explaining why.
We teach Systema, a Russian martial art built on natural movement and breath control rather than belts, forms, or a fixed curriculum. There's no ranking system to climb. What we're building in kids instead is harder to hang on a wall, but it lasts longer: self-discipline, composure under pressure, and the confidence that comes from actually being capable.
I've taught out of our school on Donlands Ave in East York since 2003. In that time, I've noticed the parents who stick around rarely talk about how hard their kid can kick. They talk about something else — their child listens better, argues less at home, stands a little taller at school. That's the real outcome of a good kids martial arts program, in East York or anywhere else.
What Kids Martial Arts Classes Should Actually Teach
Punching and kicking are easy to see. Character is harder to spot, which is exactly why it gets skipped in programs built mainly around belt tests and trophies.
Our youth program runs on the same philosophy behind my book, Eudaimonia: The Highest Human Good — that real strength is built from character, not aggression. In practice, that means every class includes:
Self-discipline and self-control, taught before technique
Manners and respect, on the mat and off it
Anger management and non-violent conflict resolution
Goal setting and self-improvement
Team building, including between siblings training side by side
We still teach real self-defence — kids should be able to protect themselves. But it's built on top of the mental training, not instead of it.

Why East York Families Choose FightClub
A few things set our youth program apart from a typical martial arts class for kids:
No beginner cycles. Most schools sort kids into "beginner" and "advanced" groups, so a hesitant kid can wait months for the next intake. We don't run it that way — kids join whenever they're ready, and our training method works for every level in the room at once.
Year-round, not seasonal. Hockey ends. Soccer ends. FightClub doesn't. That consistency is what actually builds discipline; you can't build a habit around a three-month season.
Co-ed, including siblings. Boys and girls train together here, which is rarer than you'd think in martial arts. Brothers and sisters often train side by side, which changes the dynamic at home too.
A path that keeps going. Kids don't age out of what we teach. Many of our students grow into our adult Systema classes, training alongside their parents, or take up traditional archery, which we also teach at our East York location. A kid who starts at eight can still be training at eighteen — same school, same instructor, deeper practice.
Real credentials behind it. FightClub is sanctioned by RMA HQ, the governing body for Russian Systema. This isn't a franchise curriculum designed to look identical in every city — it's the art taught the way it's meant to be taught.
What to Expect Before Your Child's First Class
Parents usually ask a handful of questions before their kid steps on the mat for the first time.
How old does my child need to be? There's no strict cutoff. Because we don't separate beginners from advanced students, kids can start whenever they're ready.
What should they wear? Sweatpants and a t-shirt. No shoes needed — kids train barefoot or in socks.
Can we try a class first? Yes. Fill out the form on our Get Started page, and come a few minutes early so I can walk you both through the space before class begins.
"A great program, taught by a great teacher. I wish a place like this existed when I was a kid." — Eddie D. It's the reaction we hear most often once parents actually watch a class instead of just reading about one.
