What to Expect in Your Child's First Martial Arts Class
Walking your child into their first martial arts class can feel like a bigger deal than it needs to be. Here's exactly what happens, step by step, at FightClub's East York youth classes, so both of you know what to expect before you walk through the door.
Before Class — What to Bring, What to Wear
Comfortable clothing that allows free movement, a water bottle, and yourself arriving about 10 minutes early to settle in. No uniform is required for a trial class. What to expect in your child's first martial arts class.

The First 10 Minutes — Warm-Up and Introductions
Class opens with a group warm-up and the instructor introducing themselves to any new students. For younger age groups, we build in low-pressure icebreaker games to help everyone settle in before the more structured work begins.
What the Class Actually Covers
Expect basic movement drills, partner exercises, and age-appropriate technique, with games woven in for younger kids to keep things engaging. No one is sparring hard on day one. First classes are about getting comfortable, not testing skill.
How Instructors Handle Nervous or Shy Kids
Our instructors are used to first-day nerves. We never force participation. Shy kids are eased in gradually, often starting by simply watching or joining partner drills with a familiar face before jumping into group activities.
After Class — What Parents Can Expect to Hear
After class, instructors take a few minutes to talk with parents about how their child did and what to expect if they decide to continue.
